DPReview Digital Photography. Print length. Adam has also written a book on mental health, \’Surfing the Edge – a survivors guide to bipolar disorder\’, which was published in October Peter eventually does get his just desserts, but not soon enough for me to like him. There\’s nothing unique about the puzzles being featured here, but it does have a great art style and a rather convincing plot. It starts with a story narrated by an Alzheimer\’s patient, who is the Butterfly Collector, and goes on from there. Add this book to your favorite list ».

They see the sordidly prosaic details of daily life which mustn\’t be noticed and think the blunt retorts which mustn\’t be said.

Memory in these stories is relentless moral vision. It returns not just to haunt the mind but physically to stalk the world in search of justice. McGavran writes of his characters — but not of their world — sympathetically, even tenderly. The keynote of the collection is struck by the protagonist of the lead story, who focuses what is left of his Alzheimer\’s-ravaged mind on a beautiful, delicate, fragile butterfly fluttering through the crass and shallow world of his caregivers.

Throughout these stories the protagonists find hope, or at least a morally saving awareness, in the face of oppressive banality and venality. A fine and thoughtful read. Luminous not. This darkly funny collection of moral page-turners features legal characters and legal conflicts.

McGavran, a top notch civil lawyer, knows his landscape intimately and writes with a mixture of affection and horror of the humans that occupy it. His work defies easy classification as legal literature. Carefully crafted miniatures in the tradition of Chekhov and Joyce, his stories linger and haunt. Highly recommended! The Butterfly Collector. McGavran\’s stories captured the thoughts and actions and the struggels of his characters in their dealing with challenges and issues that have confronted many of us.

McGavran portrays. Fred McGavran can write. These are elegant short stories, featuring lawyers, clients, doctors, and patients. McGavran has a spare, clean writing style, dark but compassionate, as in \”Two Cures for a Phantom Limb. A superb collection. Was barely getting through some of it then hit a part in one of the stories that in essence was Republican bashing. The thoughts of the writer regarding Republicans was very clear. Should have left your personal politics out of it!

Each of these short stories are real and perhaps most appreciated by people who are middle aged or young adults with older parents. They are each unique and speak of human strength and frailty in a revered fashion. A beautiful collection.

This book of short stories was extremely enjoyable. Most of the stories had surprising twists and unpredictable endings; I found a few of the stories difficult to follow, but the author definitely thinks \”outside the box! McGavern writes from a deep knowledge of people and an even deeper sense of wonder. I have re-read the stories and find that each one opens my mind to a different perspective on the world, the people, the unknowns, and myself.
